Understanding the Proverbs 31 Woman

There is something in every woman that makes her want to strive to be the best she can be. Whether it is in her attitude, appearance, or finances, every woman has a deep desire for greatness. Most of the time we look to nicer clothes, makeup and lots of earthly advice. However, this advice often comes from people who don’t have the answers themselves and are unintentionally ill advised. In spite of these shortcomings there is hope for how women can live and be the best they can be without compromising their standards. The virtuous woman prototype is found in the Word and is a blueprint for us today.

Reflection: What does the word virtuous even mean? It means having or showing high moral standards; being chaste. This can be quite intimidating to most and even seem unattainable but God never requires anything of us that we cannot do. However, the Proverbs 31 – woman of faith exemplifies qualities that we can emulate.

A Woman of Faith 

What does it mean to be virtuous today?  God’s standards do not change and it means the same in every generation even though culture is constantly evolving. However, we are called to fear God and keep his commandments. Even though we may be living in times of moral decay where many people do not revere God or his principles, we are still required to live holy. And though it may seem hard if we truly love God we will do as he commands and be the light in this dark world.

Proverbs frequently cautions against adulterous, foolish women but The Proverbs 31 woman is the opposite of this as she is the epitome of excellence and godliness.   She is a wise woman who honors God with her life and gifts and she is also a woman of great faith and fortitude. In terms of her worth – her value cannot be measured. In terms of trust – her husband has full confidence in her. Hence, she is an asset to her family and is greatly respected. She is supportive of her husband and does him good. These are qualities that every man wants and that every woman should aspire to have. Every woman should desire to use her gifts and talents to the benefit of her family and community. Above all, she is creating a legacy for her children and generations to come. She is the prime example of what young women can desire and look up to. 

How can You Be A Virtuous Woman

• Exercise: Identify qualities you admire in others and how they reflect virtue. The woman identified in Proverbs 31 has qualities that are to be admired. As a woman, you may feel very ordinary but your godly traits and the desire to live fully for Him make you and other godly women extraordinary. God + ordinary = Extraordinary. Identify those qualities in yourselves and other women around you. How do these qualities reflect virtue?
